If hydrogen is flammable and fires need oxygen to spread how come water extiguishes fire, yet contains both?
As we all know water contains hydrogen and oxygen, 2 key ingredients of a healty fire.
Water is not simply a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas. It is a chemically distinct species, in which each oxygen atom is chemically bonded to two hydrogen atoms. Furthermore, "combustion" is, in general, the reaction of a substance with oxygen. When hydrogen combusts, it reacts with oxygen to form water. Much of the energy released in this combustion reaction results from the comparative stability of water molecules relative to hydrogen and oxygen molecules. If you want to break a water molecule into its constituent elements (hydrogen and oxygen), you must supply energy equivalent to that stored in water's intramolecular bonds.
Contrary to what another user has suggested, water is not capable of "burning," because it is the direct product of burning. There is nothing left to burn. The explosive and well-known reaction between water and alkali metals like sodium actually involves the reduction--not oxidation (combustion)--of water. Instead, it is the metal that is being oxidized. Hydrogen atoms have only a single electron and therefore cannot be oxidized beyond the +1 state they are in in water. Combustion entails oxidation, and therefore, water cannot be combusted.
